A Staple for the Community, Restored.

Re-established in April 2022.

After many years of vacancy and decline, Wheatland Plaza is once again becoming a beacon of hope for the Duncanville community. Learn more about the history of Duncanville, Wheatland Plaza, and what the future holds for this important Market Center.

  • Present-day Duncanville began as a small settlement that predated Texas statehood.

In 1880, the Chicago, Texas, and Mexican Central Railway reached the area and built Duncan Switch, named for a line foreman. Charles P. Nance, the community's first postmaster, renamed the settlement Duncanville in 1882. By the late 19th century, Duncanville was home to a dry-goods stores, a pharmacy, a domino parlor, and a school.

  • Once an important shopping destination for Duncanville residents, with anchor stores like Minyard Food Store and Eckerd Pharmacy, Wheatland Plaza experienced a steady decline in the 2010s and early 2020s. Eventually it lost its anchor tenants. With only a few tenants and many empty spaces, the entire plaza fell into disrepair. In 2022, Monte Anderson and the City of Duncanville finalized a partnership to revitalize the market space. They broke ground on the redevelopment in April 2022.

  • The redevelopment of Wheatland Plaza will see over $10 million invested over the next couple of years with a new mixed-use retail center. Within in the 5-7 years, Monte Anderson and the city of Duncanville hope the revitalization of Wheatland Plaza to be fully complete.

Heard on the Street

“What typically takes months to accomplish, was done in weeks with the same diligence and attention to detail our citizens expect of us. I am extremely excited to watch for the positive changes that will come with this project. It is truly astounding.”

- Duncanville Mayor Barry L. Gordon
